My timing was off when I went to the Film Forum to see Public Speaking, the new documentary by Martin Scorsese about writer-lecturer-cultural critic Fran Liebowitz.

Unbeknownst to me, the screening before mine included Fran herself answering questions from the audience.

I would have loved to hear her speak in person—I’m a longtime super fan of her urbane and hilarious know-it-all wit.

Oh well, no regrets.  I thoroughly enjoyed the movie (It’s excellent!) and I did get to snap a photo of her, having a smoke, outside the theater.

I’m showing my age by posting these old photos of Times Square, but fantastic and feisty Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York requested that I do so after I sent over a couple of them taken outside the Gaiety Theater, which Jeremiah recently posted about.

The photos are from 1988 and feature the late great Mr. Fashion (a.k.a. Gerard Little), who was part of the kooky Pyramid Club performance scene.

Times Square at the time was definitely rough around the edges, but it was also very campy with its wild mix of seedy porn theaters, tacky clothing and souvenir stores and old-school bars and eateries.  With Mr. Fashion decked out in his leopard-trim best, we found tons of great backdrops.  He posed, I shot.

I was just wondering why Lady Miss Kier hasn’t been a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The former Deee-lite singer seems like a natural choice, considering her fine-tuned drag sensibility and the fact that she and RuPaul have known each other since they were stars of the NYC club scene.

Now I know why after Kier posted a Facebook comment yesterday:

I gotta support Kier’s decision—because she’s my sister!   Well, at least we played sisters in a short film by Bec Stupak.  So we’re almost blood.

Drinking junk food on set.
