Last night I saw the recently released indie film Moonlight, a coming-of-age story about the devastating impact of societal homophobia and parental neglect. The acting is fantastic, not a false note in the entire film, and there’s buzz about Academy Award nominations.  I really loved it.

The movie follows a young boy into adulthood, and the main character is played by three different actors.

The cast of  “Moonlight” includes singer Janelle Monáe, upper right. Director Barry Jenkins is lower right.

The movie was inspired by a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, based on some of his own experiences growing up.

My favorite genre of films is stark realism, and it was a great night at the cinema!

An exhibit by the artist known as Tabboo! (a.k.a. Stephen Tashjian) is on display at Howl Happening Gallery in the East Village, featuring 14 portraits of her nearest and dearest. (I’m not included, even though we’ve known each other for decades. Am I bitter? Of course not! I realize an artist must be free to choose her muses.)

Tabboo!, in orange, also mounted a one-night costume drama, as part of the exhibit. As you can see it was a colorful affair! (Photo by Miles Landin)

I snapped some pix of the performers with their portraits, including Brandon Olson.

Another of Tabboo!’s recent projects has been collaborating with designer Marc Jacobs. Anne Hanavan shows off a dress from the collection, adorned with Tabboo!’s signature swizzles and shapes.  (Anne’s portrait is also in the show.)

The show is up through Nov 12th. Highly recommended!

I love that Halloween in NYC is more about adults than children.

Kids in costume = Cute

Grown-ups in costume = Fantasia!

Because I host Bingo at Le Poisson Rouge on weekends, my holiday started on Friday with a casual devilish look. Without the horns could I pass for Little Red Riding Hood?

On Saturday, I opted for clown attire, and hung out after my Bingo gig at Le Poisson Rouge’s weekly ’80s party. Not normally my scene, but I had a blast! And I knew all the songs!

On Halloween itself, I was back in clown mode, socializing with friends at my apartment and then wandering over to Times Square.

Times Square is usually kind of obnoxious, but it’s a great for Halloween, including meeting new friends like Chucky!

Blessed by Jesus, who is now a bit older and working as a photographer.

Congrats to my friend Alex for his first time in drag. Serving butch & femme!

My fave photo from the night! Alex being engulfed by Samir’s golden wings!

That was my third year in a row hanging out in Times Square for Halloween. So I guess it’s a tradition… I’ll be back, hopefully in something new!
